RISC helps safeguard Thai homes from radioactive radon gas

9 August 2018, Bangkok - RISC has teamed up with the Thailand Institute for Nuclear Technology (TINT) to measure levels of the cancer-causing gas radon in building materials used in Thailand. Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at RISC, the center will partner in a three-year study, providing material information and experimental support.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at RISC, the center will partner in a three-year study, providing material information and experimental support.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Singh Intrachooto, Chief Advisor to RISC, said: "Radon is colorless, odorless, and is in the environment, buildings, homes, so it can be hard to detect. But it is also a health risk, responsible for many thousands of deaths globally. We aim to safeguard Thai homes by checking a full range of potential hazards, such as fly ash in cement, to develop data for the construction industry."

Radon is considered the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, causing an estimated 21,000 deaths each year in the United States.

Thailand's radon levels are not generally high. But studies have suggested some building materials might pose a risk.

TINT Executive Director Pornthep Nisamaneephong, said: "If the study uncovers levels of radon that could pose a risk to health, we expect to work together on educational and awareness-raising activities with RISC and MQDC."
