The dangers of blue light

The dangers of blue light

As we get older, we’re at greater risk of eye disease, especially now social media keeps us glued to a screen all day. Clips and even video calls can harm our eyesight.

Let’s explore the dangers of blue light. How can we protect our corneas? Here are some handy tips from The Aspen Tree…

Blue Screen 2

“Blue light disturbs our life clock”

Our life clock sets the circadian rhythm for our body systems such as temperature, hormones, especially when we sleep and wake.

But if our eyes are exposed to blue light for a long time from fun clips on mobile phones or tablets, our life clock gets out of sync. Blue light keeps our bodies on alert. It’s harder to sleep. And when we wake up, we don't feel refreshed but stay sleepy.

Blue Screen 3

“Blue light tires your eyes and blurs your vision”

If you stare at a computer screen or mobile phone for a long time you run the risk of “Computer Vision Syndrome”, causing eye strain, irritation, tears, and possibly blurred vision.

Intense blue light affects the conjunctiva and corneal cells. You won’t notice how the screen’s flickering, but it’s making your eyes work harder without you realizing it. These processes are very risky for your eyes.

Blue Screen 4

“Blue light can really harm your eyes”

Blue light carries so much energy that it shines right into your cornea, your eye’s vital lens. It can harm photoreceptor cells in your retina, triggering macular degeneration. Your eyesight can get worse and you can face various eyes diseases.

Blue Screen 5

“Your eyes are the windows of your soul”

Look after your eyes in 4 simple ways:

  1. The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take your eyes off your phone or computer screen and look at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  2. Adjust screen brightness or apply a blue light filter, especially at night or in low light.
  3. Avoid winds or air conditioning to prevent dry eyes or fatigue.
  4. Have your eyes checked at least once a year, because eye health starts to decline after 50. Look after your eyes to keep the window of your soul healthy and see the people you love clearly.
