MQDC to Develop GMC Special Administrative Region in Bhutan
19–23 February 2026, Gelephu, Bhutan – MQDC has been entrusted with the opportunity to develop the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a pioneering economic city that harmoniously integrates spirituality, nature, and technology, advancing toward a new model of a Special Administrative Region designed to deliver well-being alongside sustainable economic prosperity.
MQDC’s Corporate Communications unit organized a media trip, inviting leading Thai media representatives including 3 Mitti, The Standard, TNN, and Bangkok Post to visit, observe and gain insights, and deepen their understanding of the GMC project, in which MQDC plays a key role as a development partner in this landmark initiative.
Over 5 days, participating media attended comprehensive project briefings covering the overall development framework and the city’s core design philosophy centered on “Mindfulness,” alongside economic development, green technology, and long-term quality of life. The delegation also toured key development areas and significant sites across Gelephu.
A highlight of the visit and a profound honor for the delegation was the opportunity to be granted an audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. His Majesty graciously hosted the delegation for tea and shared his vision for the future development of this model city. He further led a personal tour of the Old Town area, creating a deeply memorable and meaningful experience for all attendees.
The media also participated in several significant events, including the celebration of His Majesty’s Birth Anniversary, the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the construction of a stupa — a spiritual symbol of faith and auspiciousness as well as volunteer activities with the local community. These experiences reflected the project’s commitment to development that is thoughtfully rooted in culture, spirituality, and community engagement.
The participating media were highly impressed by the vision of the GMC project, marking another important step in deepening understanding of MQDC’s role in developing cities and large-scale international projects.
